When People Feel Seen, They Come Alive

March 22, 20262 min read

When I was working in the corporate world, I learned something that stayed with me.

People want to be seen. Not just for results, but for the effort they put in and how they show up every day. I was always a team player, and I believed that if the team wins, everyone wins. That’s how I worked, and that’s how I approached everything I did.

But like any workplace, politics was there. You can’t really avoid it. And over time, I started to notice that sometimes it wasn’t the people doing the best work who were being recognized. It was the ones who knew how to play the game.

I didn’t play that game. I just focused on my work. I showed up with honesty, did my job, and stayed committed to the goal. But eventually, it became exhausting. The environment felt heavy, and I realized I wasn’t growing anymore. That’s when I decided to leave.

When I moved into my next role as a Project Manager, I carried that experience with me. I understood the feeling of being invisible, and I wanted no one on my team to experience that.

So I made sure I led differently. I listened to my team. I allowed them the space to do their work the way they knew how. I didn’t micromanage them because I trusted them. I wanted them to grow, not feel controlled.

And it worked.

Our team became strong. People showed up differently. They were more engaged, more confident, and more willing to take ownership. We grew together, and I made it a point to ensure that each person felt seen and appreciated.

Of course, no team is perfect. There will always be challenges, and sometimes someone struggles. When that happened, I didn’t ignore it or judge it right away. I approached it with clear communication, understanding, and support. It wasn’t about blaming; it was about helping them move forward.

I also made sure I stood up for my team. I took responsibility with them, not above them. And that made a big difference.

Even now, even though I’m no longer working with them, the respect is still there. The connection is still there.

And I believe it comes down to something simple.

People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel.

When people feel seen, they come alive.
